Fishing with Dad

Joshua was very excited to spend the week home with Dad while Mom worked and Trey finished up his summer IFTA classes.  First on the agenda?  Fishing!  They had a great time fishing at Burke Lake although Joshua had some reservations about the size of the fish they caught.  No matter, though, spending the time with dad and actually catching some fish made for a superfun day for my boy.

My Teen Goes to Texas

In a heart-wrenching decision (for me, anyway), we allowed our teenager to fly -- alone -- from Washington DC to Austin, Texas.  For some, that may not have been a big decision and for others, we may seem crazy for letting him do it, but for us, it was a good choice. This poor kid was the best-informed, best-educated, best-prepared, best-prepped passenger on the plane.  We spent a great deal of time talking him through every possible scenario, testing him on what he would do in each scenario, and reviewing every single airline policy, procedure, and guideline.  We walked him to the very edge of security screening and kept our eyes on him until he absolutely had to enter the waiting area for his flight.  We alerted our Texas connection and reminded him to call and text when he landed, when he de-boarded, and when he met up with Uncle Danny in Austin.   It was no surprise that he made it there just fine and was happy to make the trip (sort of) alone. ...

Happy Father's Day 2013

We made our second trip to Gaithersburg, Maryland to celebrate Father's Day this year.  The Texas State Society hosts a super-fun event each year on Father's Day weekend and we had a wonderful time.  We were able to spend the day with Robert and Elizabeth (along with Peter and Georgia) and Chad and Jennifer (with Callie, Colton, and Lexie).  It was such a treat to get to spend this time with them and enjoy our Texas friends! Mini golf fun for the boys. Trey loves a zip line! Joshua chills on the zip line. Joshua and Colton ready for another run. Trey and Peter climb the rock wall. Georgia the Cute Cat Cobbler and BLUE BELL ice cream!! Battle buddies catch up.

Water Fun at BLORA

So Plan A was to spend the afternoon at the Killeen Aquatics Center ... one of my boys' favorite places on earth. Even more fun was the fact we were meeting some fun friends there to share the day.  However, on this first day of summer ... they were CLOSED for a private event!  Bummer! So a quickly assembled Plan B sent us to Lake Belton for some water fun there.  It turned out to be a great afternoon ... swimming at the swim beach and trying out the water slides and Auto Kid Car Wash.  A great day one of Summer 2011! Trey runs through the Auto Kid Wash. Joshua comes down the water slide.  So fun!

College for Kids

My boys and our neighbor's two kids enrolled in Central Texas College's "College for Kids" this summer and enjoyed a week of experiments and activities focused on science and weather. They had a fabulous time and loved spending the time together, too. The kids enjoyed some fun games before and after class.  This one is a version of "Hot Potato" but used a water-bottle tornado and was called "Tornado Toss." We found a family of ducks on the way home from class.  Most of the conversation focused on how cute they were until my youngest child jumped in with, "We should hunt the ducks!  No, it's not the right season ... I know!  We could just knock out the mom with our water bottles and steal the babies!"  Yikes.  Who raised this child? Four cute kids by the CTC Fountain after a fun week in class!

Our Pretend Camp-Out

We love camping ... we were initiated as Tiger Cubs in Cub Scouts and have enjoyed it ever since.  We tent-camp and cook our own food and understand all the rules of "Leave No Trace," but in the summer, there is a long list of reasons why camping is just not an option (at least for me!) ... scorching temperatures, hungry mosquitoes, and oppressive humidity top the list. So when my boys started begging to camp this summer, I got creative.  Like many moms before me, I suggested an indoor camping event.  After a little persuasion, they were on board.  They even talked me into a fire in the outdoor fire pit.  We roasted hot dogs and s'mores then created a wonderful indoor tent out of various blankets and random heavy objects in our dining room.  It was a fun night that satiated their need to camp ... and kept mama happy, too! Enjoying some s'mores! Roasting more marshmallows! The completed indoor tent Boys asleep in their tent ... with on...
