Happy Independence Day, America!

We enjoyed our first 4th of July in the Nation's Capitol at a staff party with Nate's new colleagues.  It was wonderful for me to meet everyone and seeing fireworks over the Washington Monument was absolutely breath-taking. The boys had a great time as well.  At one point, the kids in the group naturally divided into teams.  During one of my routine checks, I found Joshua and several other boys huddled together in the yard.  When I asked what they were doing, they replied, "This is our HQ.  We're planning our next attack."  Gotta love a group of military kids! It was an absolutely lovely evening celebrating our Nation's independence ... Happy 4th of July! We are ready for the fireworks show! Trey says, "I love fire."  Yikes.  =) Sparklers make it a party! Conflicting Emotions After bin Laden's Death

I'm listening to around-the-clock coverage of the death of Osama bin Laden, the terrorist credited for planning the 9/11 attack on our country.  I'm struck by an onslaught of conflicting emotions and am trying to sort through them even as I type. I am continuously overwhelmed at the sheer perserverance of our military members and honor them for their vigilance, courage, and sacrifice.  I feel great pride in our armed forces and gratitude for the many servicemembers who have spent the past years serving in harm's way.  I am heartbroken for those servicemembers who never made it home and  mournful for their Families.  I am glad that there is one less criminal mastermind on earth to plot evil against our country and sensitive to the fact that, for many who lost loved ones on 9/11/01, this event could bring some sense of closure and justice for them.  I am hopeful that this serves as an indicator that we are one step closer to peace.
