My Teen Goes to Texas

In a heart-wrenching decision (for me, anyway), we allowed our teenager to fly -- alone -- from Washington DC to Austin, Texas.  For some, that may not have been a big decision and for others, we may seem crazy for letting him do it, but for us, it was a good choice. This poor kid was the best-informed, best-educated, best-prepared, best-prepped passenger on the plane.  We spent a great deal of time talking him through every possible scenario, testing him on what he would do in each scenario, and reviewing every single airline policy, procedure, and guideline.  We walked him to the very edge of security screening and kept our eyes on him until he absolutely had to enter the waiting area for his flight.  We alerted our Texas connection and reminded him to call and text when he landed, when he de-boarded, and when he met up with Uncle Danny in Austin.   It was no surprise that he made it there just fine and was happy to make the trip (sort of) alone. My precious teen, ready

Happy Father's Day 2013

We made our second trip to Gaithersburg, Maryland to celebrate Father's Day this year.  The Texas State Society hosts a super-fun event each year on Father's Day weekend and we had a wonderful time.  We were able to spend the day with Robert and Elizabeth (along with Peter and Georgia) and Chad and Jennifer (with Callie, Colton, and Lexie).  It was such a treat to get to spend this time with them and enjoy our Texas friends! Mini golf fun for the boys. Trey loves a zip line! Joshua chills on the zip line. Joshua and Colton ready for another run. Trey and Peter climb the rock wall. Georgia the Cute Cat Cobbler and BLUE BELL ice cream!! Battle buddies catch up.

Nerf War: Silly String Battle

After a series of Nerf battles, the kids gathered for pizza and cake then were right back at it, battling through the afternoon.  This time, the weapon was Silly String!

Nerf War: The Battles Begin

Nerf War: Gearing Up for Battle

Upon arrival, the boys had to avoid becoming a target of Joshua's dad ... a "REAL LIFE SOLDIER!!" Then, it was time for camo face paint, tattoos, bandannas, dog tags, arm bands, and target practice.

Joshua's All-Out Nerf War Party

Joshua added the Army men to his camo cake. The target practice area included paper plates stapled to trees, balloons with tanks on them, and the camo boxes. Welcome to the All-Out Nerf War Zone! All the kids received dog tags, arm bands, and camo or black neckerchiefs to prepare for the battles. Army themed tattoos and camo face paint for the warriors. Camo face paint from a local party store was available to help our warriors take cover when needed. Joshua greets his guests from behind a camo barrier.
